We’re excited to share this interview with her to learn more about her and her growing custom cookie business…. please enjoy!

How did the Butterfly Bakehouse start?

In February 2020, owner Crystal Walker decided to leave her teaching job after experiencing a variety of health issues for several years. As she began considering a slower paced, more creative career, she focused on a hobby and skill she’d had since childhood: baking.

She merged her love of the arts and inner creativity into a home bakery, named after her grandmother who firmly believed she would be reincarnated as a butterfly.

When did the business open up?

After spending the early part of lockdown researching Tennessee Cottage Farm Laws, royal icing cookie decorating techniques, baking tools, and more, Crystal announced her business in May 2020. The first order was placed in June.

What are the most popular items on the menu?

The year round royal icing cookies are vanilla almond sugar cookies with a hint of lemon. This is the flavor that most customers are most familiar with. But, during the fall and winter, Crystal provides other options to match the season. The chocolate peppermint cookies were very popular during Christmas!

What’s best about living and working in Crieve Hall?

Crystal and her partner have lived in the Crieve Hall area since 2017 and have loved every second of it. It has just about everything: easy accessibility to schools, groceries, shops, incredible local businesses, etc. One of their most favorite aspects of this area is being right down the road from Radnor Lake and Ellington Agricultural Center – they love getting to see all the wildlife in this neighborhood (especially during the summer)! Even in the midst of a pandemic, she has met the most lovely residents in this area, and she loves how safe, cozy, and family-oriented Crieve Hall is. Not to mention, we have the most beautiful mural ("Love Where You Live") made especially for our beautiful neighborhood –  an initiative from the Crieve Hall Women’s League!

What should Crieve Hall residents know about Butterfly Bakehouse?

The cookies are truly customized for any occasion. Crystal would love to meet more Crieve Hall neighbors by providing cookies for any upcoming birthdays, events, and more! Also, this summer she will be serving royal icing cookies at Farmin' in the Hall once a month and looks forward to meeting more Crieve Hall residents there.

There you have it! Thank you so much Crystal for being our first Behind the Brand spotlight! We hope you’ll support Crystal for all of your cookie needs.
